WINTER OPERATIONS TRAINING - ARE YOU TRAINED FOR COLD WEATHER OPERATIONS?

For the professional pilot Winter Operations training is an essential preparation for cold weather with freezing rain and slush, temperatures above or below freezing. Being aware of and understanding the formation of ice and the importance of ice detection, contamination and its effects on safe flight brings major safety improvements to winter operations and also cut unnecessary costs. There can be no such thing as too much awareness in this aspect of aviation.

Every year several accidents are attributed to the effect of ice and contamination on aircraft performance. The Winter Operations training program provides the trainees with practical knowledge that can be applied to secure safe operations both on the ground and in the air. It includes all the topics required in the proposed JAR/FAR training regulations.

Operators usually realise the possibility of encountering icing conditions in areas where winter is unavoidable but there are hidden dangers in regions where winter weather aspects are not so obvious. Finnair has successfully learned to adapt to the realities of winter and the large weather variations of the seasons. This program is intended to share this knowledge with other airlines and their pilots worldwide.

The modular structure of the course makes it possible to train both new pilots as well as for refreshing the knowledge of experienced pilots. The recurrent version of the course consists of 3 lessons out of 4.

Audience

  • Initial pilot training
  • Pilot transition training
  • Recurrent training
  • Ground personnel
  • Technical staff
  • Other aircraft or airport personnel involved in winter operations

Lesson 2. Theory of flight in winter operations
Lesson 3. Runway maintenance
Lesson 4. De-icing and anti-icing
